There are nine public sector undertakings and two cooperative societies under the administrative control of the Department of Fertilizers. At present , there are 63 large size fertilizer units in the country, manufacturing a wide range of nitrogenous and phosphatic/ complex fertilizers. Of these, 38 units produce urea whereas   9 units produce ammonium sulphate as a by-product. Besides, there are about 79 small and medium scale units producing single superphosphate.
