The main activities of the Department of Fertilizers (DOF) broadly cover planning, promotion and development of the fertilizer industry, planning and monitoring of production, import and distribution of fertilizers and management of financial assistance for indigenous and imported fertilizers.

2.The Department is  divided into four divisions dealing with (i) Fertilizer Projects and Planning (ii) Fertilizer Imports, Movement and Distribution (iii) Administration and (iv) Finance and Accounts. The work of first three divisions is handled by two Joint Secretaries. viz Joint Secretary(Admn.& Movt.) and and Joint Secretary(Fertilizers).

3. Besides administration Joint Secretary (A & M) also looks after the work of monitoring and evaluation of production, import, movement & distribution of fertilizers, and administration and management of Coucession scheme for de- controlled phosphatic and potassic fertilizers. He also is the designated Director of Grievances of the Department.

4. The Joint Secretary (F) is entrusted with the work pertaining to planning, production and development of fertilizer industry which includes New Pricing Schene for urea units, joint ventures, external assistance for new fertilizer projects, revival of sick fertilizer units, company affiars of fertilizer PSUs and issues relating to raw materials such as natural gas, fuel oil and naptha.

5. The Department has an Economic Advisor in the Grade of Joint Secretary who advises the Department on various economic issues. Recently, Director (Statistics) has also been posted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Apart from all matters related to fertilizer statistics, he has been entrusted the task to bring out a book on 'Fertilizer Statistics of India'.

6. The Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser is  in charge of Finance and Accounts Division.

7. The Vigilance set up is headed by Joint Secretary (A&M) who is also the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) designate for the Department assisted by Director (Vig.) and Under Secretary (Vig.)  with supporting staff. The ambit of the vigilance activities of the Department of Fertilizers includes superintendence and supervision over the vigilance administration of the nine fertilizer PSUs and the one fertilizer cooperative KRIBHCO, under its jurisdiction; as well as over the Department .
